Political Cartoons, also known as editorial cartoons, are cartoons that can be related to current events. Usually political cartoons use different methods to get their point across such as symbolism and satire. These cartoons generally appeal to the general public but sometimes only portray the beliefs of select groups. Not everyone may agree with the opinion of the cartoon but mostly everyone should be able to understand the message. Also, political cartoons can often get their message out there in a more meaningful way because you do not have to read an entire article to understand what is going on.
The Vietnam War lasted from November 1955 to April 1975. Known as the Second Indochina War, this Cold War conflict created much controversy in the United States due to politician’s lack of communication regarding just how involved the US was in this East Asia confrontation. South Vietnamese combatants, backed heavily by US troops battled against the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army with both north and south being united under the flag of communism at the conclusion of the fighting in 1975.
Since the Vietnam War was such a controversial war, political cartoons were very popular during that time. Political cartoons were used to express the strong options that were associated with the Vietnam War. The political cartoons not only reflect what is going on politically but also emotionally in the U.S. during the time of war. Most people believe that the Americans should have never gotten involved in the war so many of the political cartoons during this time show that unhappiness and frustration. The cartoons also use symbolism and analogies to make the occurrences and relevant events of the war easier to understand. The cartoonists also use labels to clearly show what something represents in the cartoon.
